Unfortunately, Haddix lost not only the no-hitter, but the game itself in the 13th inning on a controversial home run by Joe Adcock that turned out not to be a home run. He did it by pitching 12 perfect innings, the longest hitless game ever hurled. Some 19,194 were in attendance to see Haddix make baseball history. His opponent for the first place Milwaukee Braves was Lew Burdette, who would pitch a no-hitter himself in 1960. The 33-year-old Haddix carried a 2-3 record to the mound for the third place Bucs. ![]() ![]() Haddix had joined the Pirates that winter in a blockbuster trade with the Reds. One of the two greatest games ever pitched (the other was by Don Larsen) was hurled by Pittsburgh's little Harvey Haddix on Tuesday, May 26, at Milwaukee County Stadium.
